Kentucky Board of Nursing Audit

Dear KyANA members:

Many of you have recently received letters from the Kentucky Board of Nursing. These letters are requesting an audit for your required five (5) CE credits for pharmacology. On Thursday, November 29, 2007 I met with Mary Stewart from the KBN. After discussing the various means by which CRNAs acquire their CEUs, she asked that we pass information along to our members on how to address this audit and how to avoid one in the future. First of all, any activity that is approved by the AANA is recognized for CE credits by the KBN. Secondly, it is a requirement that a copy of our national certification / recertification card is to be filed with the KBN after each AANA recertification period . If this is not done this may initiate an audit

. As far as pharmacology credits, it is difficult for the KBN to determine the content of many lectures. Therefore, the following evidence will help to support claims for credits:

  1. Provide the certificate that was presented by the credit provider that states the date of the activity and the provider's name. Pharmacology credits may be listed on this certificate but are not always listed.
  2. A copy of the meeting / lecture brochure listing specific content for the particular activity if the hours are not listed on the above certificate (1). KBN is aware of activities such as Current Reviews, Audio Digest, CMEZone, and others.
  3. As far as ACLS /PALS courses and pharmacology credit, a breakdown of such content in number of hours during the course would be considered.

In order to avoid future audits, let me reiterate the requirement to send a copy of your certification / recertification card to KBN either by fax:

As was announced a few months ago, the KBN will accept CMEs acquired through the many means that exist for pharmacology credits starting with this year's renewal cycle ending October 2008. Drug rep dinner presentations, meetings / lectures not approved by the AANA, online CME programs, etc are such examples.  These will again require a breakdown of pharmacology content to be considered. Certificates may have to be requested from the provider of CMEs to qualify. I hope this helps any of you who have been audited and helps decrease the probability of this occurring in the future.
Sincerely
David Schwytzer, CRNA
President-Elect, KyANA
